Promoting Safe Ridership
Post Signage
For escalators, ASME code-approved safety signs should be mounted at each end of the escalator. These signs cover the most essential safe-ridership rules:
These signs are available in several formats through your local Schindler office.
Because it is dangerous to bring wheeled vehicles or bulky packages onto an escalator, signs should be posted alerting passengers where to find alternative elevator transportation. For elevators, the most appropriate signage is the reminder to use stairs in the event of a fire. A number of commercial sign companies make attractive versions of this sign. The message can also be engraved onto your corridor button cover plates in many cases. Remind Building Tenants If you have an employee or tenant newsletter, use it as a good vehicle for periodic reminders about safe ridership. Use one of Schindler's award winning videos at a safety rally, or just run the video in the cafeteria or other gathering spot. Have a contest to see who can come up with the best "safe ridership" rules, and then circulate them Keep Your Eyes Open Building personnel should be trained to monitor the elevators and escalators. If an unsafe situation is observed, appropriate actions should be taken. These might include reminding a passenger of an unsafe practice that was observed, or shutting down equipment if it appears to be operating in an unsafe or unusual manner and calling the elevator service company for assistance. Keep Up With the Times While your elevators and escalators were installed in compliance with then-applicable codes, it's likely that safety enhancements may have been developed that could make your equipment even safer to operate. Schindler's EQIP (Elevator/ Escalator Quality Improvement Products) program includes a wide range of safety upgrades for elevators and escalators. Many of these upgrades are now standard-equipment on new elevators and escalators, and are required by current code. |
