Improving Elevator Security
While building security people have the main burden of access control, elevator hardware and software can be helpful in this area. Restricted access is usually provided via a keyed switch, keypad or card-access reader.

Most elevator codes require that access control systems be overridden when fire emergency service has been activated. Access systems also require discipline by your passengers. For tightest security, authorized passengers should never allow others to "piggy-back" rides to restricted areas.

Types of Access Control
  • Restrict access to areas of your building on a continuous basis, or only during off-hours or other selected times.
  • Restrict access to elevators from the ground floor, so only authorized people can travel to other floors.
  • Restrict access to certain floors selectively, tailored to your individual needs.
Monitoring and Communications
With elevator monitoring systems, you can know just where every elevator car is, where it's going, and whether it's being delayed by passenger actions. Video monitoring systems can help expand your building's security into your elevators.

Hands-free telephones are standard in most new elevators, but many older elevators can be retrofitted with phones to allow passengers to summon assistance quickly.
