Housekeeping Can Help Reduce Accidents
Reducing elevator and escalator accidents has always been a top priority at Schindler. We've invested millions in technology improvements, ridership education and guides for owners. Sometimes, simple things like housekeeping can make a big difference in helping to reduce accidents.
Your Important Role While Schindler may service your elevators or escalators, you're responsible for the day-to-day operation. So, here are a few hints that can help you improve safety and reduce the chances of accidents and litigation.
Elevators
- Watch for unusual conditions.
- Check regularly for unusual operation, sounds or vibration.
- Contact Schindler to promptly resolve them. Keep floor areas clean and clear.
- Make sure the floor of the elevator and the hallway floors are free of trash or slippery substances.
- Make sure no obstructions block the smooth flow of traffic.Check the door sill grooves.
- Grooves in the door sills help guide the doors in their proper path. Debris in the grooves can interfere with proper door operation. Be sure to check the sill grooves regularly.Maintain proper lighting.
- Passengers need adequate lighting to watch where they're going, both in the car and in the hallways.Maintain proper machine room temperatures.
- Too much heat in a machine room can adversely affect the control system.
- For hydraulic elevators, either too much or too little heat can impact the proper leveling of the cars and lead to tripping accidents. Be sure ceiling panels are secured.
- Loose ceiling panels can pose a hazard to passengers. Keep an eye out for any that may have been moved by someone carrying tall items in the elevator.Restrict machine room access.
- No one should be permitted into the machine room except trained elevator technicians.

- Check regularly for unusual operation, sounds or vibration.
- Contact Schindler to promptly resolve them. Keep steps and landings clean.
- Passengers need to be able to keep a secure footing at all times. Remove any dirt or debris from the steps and landing areas.Use the switches properly.
- Always remove the start-up key from the on-direction switch.
- If the escalator makes an emergency stop, have it checked by a qualified technician before restarting.Don't obstruct traffic flow.
- People riding the escalator need a clear exit area.
- Don't obstruct it with displays, fixtures or anything that can slow traffic.
