Emergency Situations Stalled Elevators
Fires
Elevators should never be used during a fire except for firefighters or other specially trained people. The building stairways should be used as the exit route for people who may be in the building duing a fire emergency. Many modern elevators have special Fire Emergency controls which bring the cars to the main (exit) floor, open the doors, and permit further use by emergency crews only. Some of these systems are activated automatically by smoke sensors in the building, while others require manual activation, usually with a keyed switch. Earthquakes In many earthquake prone areas of the country, local codes require special earthquake features on elevator systems. These may include seismic switches which detect movement and shut down the elevator. Following an earthquake, it is very important not to run elevators until they are fully checked by a qualified elevator technician. For roped elevators, there can be danger due to the possibility of the counterweight being out of alignment, posing a threat of collision with the elevator car. For hydraulic elevators, damage can occur to the piping in the system. Other unforeseen damage can also be a problem. Only restore the equipment to service after it has been examined by a qualified technician. |
